Those people have their own opinions. Not everyone does. If you really want to, there’s nothing stopping you. So, what’s the worst that could happen? You might not like it? Not the end of the world. I read a book that had bad reviews – it’s my fav book lol.

If I’d read and enjoyed other books by that author, and if the reviews disliked the book for some characteristic I don’t care about, I wouldn’t let them put me off.

Of course, I can usually tell if I like a book within the first chapter.

I hate when I have to because it’s a book club selection, but I generally will start it if the synopsis is interesting. No law says I have to finish it.
I just saw a book that got a bad review because the reviewer didn’t think the title suited the book, but he loved the writing; kind of a harsh review for such a minor deal, don’t you think? I’ve really liked books until I got to the last ten pages, and then hated them (anything by Jodi Picolt fits here) so to me, that’s a big deal and would totally trash the book. Others seem to love them and must excuse the ending to rate them so highly.
I would say a book that’s rated 4.5 of 5 with over a hundred reviews is safe, but sticking to only them makes me feel like a lemming. I like the adventure of reading something a little uncommon.
