I read the Nevernding story for the first time at age 9. I loved it, even though it was a pretty long and complex book to read at that age. I love it still, and think it’s a marvellous book – for children and adults alike.
I think the film version might be to blame for the negative reviews. As you may know, the film covers (quite faithfully) only the first part of the book, in short, only the beginning of the story. Where the movie ends, the real adventures -and real problems (Ende deals with quite profound and complicated issues, for a children’s book)- start. I guess those who read the book after watching the film might have found themselves disappointed: the story is no simple happy fantasy adventure. It is so much more than that.
If you are looking for a very light, cheerful read, you might prefer other books.
If, however, you are looking for a compelling, complex story, I absolutely recommend you read “The neverending story”.
