When You’re Considering What To Read Next, Do You Ever Use The Book Reviews On The Amazon Website?

I glance at them now and again.

A:            I do. You have to be very careful about your assessment of user book reviews though. If somebody just says that they do or don’t like a book I don’t pay any attention to it. I usually look at a few detailed 5 star reviews 1 star reviews to get an idea of exactly what readers did or didn’t like.
For example, I was considering purchasing Son of the Circus by John Irving for no particular reason. I saw it in the bookstore and thought I might check it out just for the hell of it. I read some 5 star reviews and thought I might be interested. Then I read the 1 star reviews. Many of the 1 star reviews claimed that John Irving was their favorite author and that they had read and loved all of his books /except/ Son of the Circus. This is one of those rare instances where I allowed the reviews to decide whether or not I would purchase a book. I figured that if a bunch of huge John Irving fans didn’t really like this particular book from him then maybe the first book I ever read of his probably shouldn’t be the one that is least liked by his own fans.
So it really depends on what type of information the reviewers give about any particular book. Sometimes I read the low ratings given to may favorite books just to see what people have to say and to remember that bad reviews on Amazon don’t necessarily mean anything.
Buying books is kind of easy for me though. I pretty much love “classic” literature and don’t like “commercial” literature.

A:              I almost always check out the few ‘most helpful’ reviews — the ones where the highest percentage of readers found it to be a helpful review — when a book has a lot of reviews listed. I also look at ‘Customers who bought this item also bought ______, since this is a good indication of what readers with similar tastes also like. The ‘wisdom of crowds’ is your friend when it comes to matters of personal preference!

A:                always read the reviews, however, they don’t influence my decision much. by the time i get to the Amazon website, i have pretty much already decided which books i am going to purchase

A:             i may not read any of the actual reviews, but I do pay attention to the star ratings if there are a lot of reviews.

    I go by subject matter and ‘reader’s instinct’. The reviews help as well. In fact, I’ve contributed a couple reviews there over the years.
