The Food Pyramid ….. that’s why it was created.

There are tons of answers to that – the new Food Pyramid is a good start, but others will suggest you switch the breads with the vegetables or whatnot – I suggest you go to a nutritionist, as everyone’s metabolism is different. A lot of public universities have health services on staff that will consult for free or very cheaply. Generally speaking, whole grains and omega fatty acids and minimal sugars are better choices – for example, seven grain bread and fruit-only preserves in the morning instead of white bread with sugared jelly. Choose red wine instead of white or mixed drinks and just have one to two glasses. Vegetables that are strongly colored inside have higher nutritional values, normally, and the darker green your greens are the better off you’ll be (for example spinach salad or mixed greens are way better than romaine, romaine is way better than iceberg.) Fiber and water are really important, and then just keep your activity level up. A VERY OCCASIONAL indulgence in something won’t hurt you, but be sure it’s more like once a month than once a week.
Keep track of what you’re eating, and remember that if for instance you were female and pregnant or nursing your needs change versus female and not pregnant or nursing. Men or women who are doing something like construction work or heavy delivery would probably need more salt than someone who sits in an office all day, that sort of thing, so consulting a nutritionist or dietitian is usually a good idea.
