Q&A: What if the government could give the the people of America an incentive in living healthy?

I just saw Food Inc. and it had me thinking that most of americans are over their normal weight (including me, that’s why this thought.) What if the government could track a way in knowing we live healthy that gives the people who are trying to live healthy a raise in their current employed jobs!
This seems very far fetch I know and I haven’t thought it all through. But what do you think, if possible how could you help my theory.

Try it on a state level. It won’t work but someone should do it for kicks.
If you have a state full of healthy people but they don’t manufacture enough goods or provide enough services to pay for the raises on those healthy people, you go bankrupt. And if you raise the pay, you also have to raise the price of the goods you sell which means it costs more for those who can’t necessarily afford it. Those are unintended consequences of government regulation.

That’s a great idea, but, knowing the government, they will probably give a paycut to those who dont’ lose weight instead of a raise to those who do. It’s the way our exploitative system works. We need a new system. If they don’t get you in one way, they’ll get you in another.
I agree with JCpnum, I don’t know why you gave me a thumbs down……… you’d think we’d make natural allies… grrr…

If the government can give incentives then it will find a way how to tax us for not eating the right foods. I think the government has too much power as it is. This is a bad idea from the get go… don’t empower them anymore than they all ready are.

Sorry, but Keep the Gov`t out of my dietary habits and job. Yes I know theres the FDA etc but they`re more of a quality control/ preventitive agency.

You seem like you want to take away a lot of liberties…whats to stop them from penalizing people who “eat unhealthy” based on a gov`t list? What you deem healthy they may not….

I think it sounds good in theory, but in the end, if you are going to diet and excercise, it is llike addictions, you first have to decide you are going to stop or eat healthy, whichever it is. See what I mean? Overeating is kind of like an addiction, an addiction to food. So, lets say you have a crack addict. You could give them all types of incentives, but until they are ready to quit, all these things probably wont matter to them. Thats just my thoughts. But hey, its a good idea. I might actually listen, so I guess there are some of us that it could reach. I too need to loose a couple pounds. LOL.

You want them to track us on our eating? Are you looking for your life to be run by others? We are a free country not a dictatorship. Have you really looked at the fat slobs whom seam to be all that. How can you lead if your not following your guide lines? Home land security is tracking ,FBI ,CIA and lord knows who else is helping them already. Make your move on getting healthy and leave them out of it.

Instead of the government – why not simply allow health insurance companies to give ‘healthy lifestyle’ discounts? (Why should people with healthy lifestyles have to subsidise the costs of medical care for an obese smoker and heavy drinker?)

Bad Idea , I think

We can’t depend on the government to make that change. They came up with the problem. We the people have to demand more instead of acting like a bunch of lemurs.
