| Book Review For “Whitney in Charge”

Book Review for: “Whitney in Charge”
Written by: Diane Craver
94 pages
Desert Breeze Publishing
ISBN: 978-1-936000-27-2
Ebook Format
5 Stars

Craver crafts a wonderful tale about sisterhood, friendships, and falling in love with “Whitney In Charge.” The Taylor Sisters are passionate, caring, and a total hoot thanks to Craver’s careful storytelling. Shannon is the oldest, about to turn forty and facing that number isn’t a pleasant thought. Regan is the middle sister and has to balance motherhood, sisterhood, and being a wife, but it’s Whitney who shines as she learns to mend her broken heart with the help of her concerned sisters.

The story starts with Shannon and Regan offering Whitney skydiving lessons in the hopes that she’ll meet a man. Whitney’s husband was a war correspondent in Iraq and lost his life there.

Whitney, who was a producer for a news show came back to her home town to take care of her mother, who was dying. She’s spent the last couple of months grieving her husband and mother, and her sisters want to her to open a new chapter in her life.

While Whitney agrees to tentatively date, she does get her sisters to agree to open up a business with her. What that business is, there’s much debate. Whitney meets a neighbor, Ben, with a young son, Adam. Ben is divorced. Whitney also meets a paramedic, Jack, through Regan. Let the best man win.

Whitney slowly comes out of her grief. She begins to put her mother’s clothes away and even takes off her wedding band. After a disastrous date with Ben, where she gets injured, she even questions if she should be dating. Then she meets Jack.

Jack inspires passion in Whitney, and while Ben is a nice guy, Whitney slowly realizes that it’s Jack who she wants to explore a relationship with. Jack has a secret though – he witnessed her husband’s death and he’s not so certain how she’s going to take it when he tells her. When he finally does, both Whitney and Jack put their past behind them.

Craver’s writing style is engaging and easy to read. The opening chapter grabs the reader right away as Shannon and Regan show concern and love for Whitney. Craver’s characters are quirky and fun. Whitney is a heroine that modern women can identify with. There are no love scenes in the book, just a few hot kisses and a sensual touching scene, which are tastefully done. If anything, I would have loved more sensual scenes between Whitney and Jack. “Whitney In Charge” is a nice romantic interlude that will leave the reader with a smile.

| Writing A Book Review

Writing a book review is one of the most challenging tasks that students are expected to carry out in the course of their academic pursuits? However, there is no need to sweat anymore as below are various ideas which will help the student carry out effective and easy book review writing tasks which are essentials to every student. Book review writing is a highly efficient task which incorporates a wide variety of skills such that students who have amassed diverse skills are more likely to garner better grades and have an easy time with the book review task than those who lack the skills. Similarly, book review is not restricted to certain disciplines as a wide variety of subjects have book review assignments where the student evaluates a book after thoroughly reading it cover to cover.

Therefore, for one to be competent in book review writing, their reading skills have to be quite okay as the ability to execute al the said instructions and objectives of the book review, they must have understood the book.

This calls for better grammatical skills such as reading and note taking as it will require a summary of the key points that are detected on the way and which should be included in the book review. However, book review does not involve a single reading of the book but several attempts in different capacities such as incorporating scanning of the major sections and later on the minor parts. Caution should be taken to read all the sections of the book being reviewed as the various issues which will be addressed are likely to originate from various section of the book. Hence book review calls for plenty of patience and perseverance as some books are rather long such that they take up longer to read cover to cover.

The book review task also entails noting down the various points as the student reads through the book.

This may include note taking of various sections or various concepts which are outlined and should be included in the book review. However, to carry out efficient note taking for the book review, the student must have read through the instructions hence when reading the book, they are able to take note of the content that is necessary for the book review writing. Failure to understand the question of the book review is detrimental as chances of incorporating the wrong information are very likely. Similarly, it may lead to poor coordination of the book review and content of the book thus causing incoherence.

The other skill that is required is use of proper grammar which will make it easier to illustrate the main point using different wording. This will present the same idea of the book review while different criteria will be used to depict the same points. Flow of information in the book review should be maintained at a high degree as a book review that does not have the consistency of other book reviews results to a poor paper.

Lastly, the student should take sufficient time to proofread the work thus eliminating any form of errors that may have occurred in the course of writing the book review.

I’m reading In Mike We Trust this week in order to do a review for Harper Teen. So far, it’s quite good.

I don’t know why, but I have a thing for book proofs. No glossy cover & still some errors in them but there’s something about them in the raw that appeals.

This is pretty heavy-duty feminist stuff, which is not meant to be a negative criticism. In fact I quite enjoyed it. Roberts throws in lots of feminist literary theory, discussing phallocentric language and literature, the historical invisibility of women’s writing and women’s history, the male canon, the position of women in Western society over recent centuries – you name it, it’s in there! But this isn’t dry academic writing (even if it isn’t exactly a novel). Roberts makes her points by telling stories, uses allegory and metaphor, and retells tales that have been appropriated by male writers and male discourse.
A challenging book, hard work but worth the effort.

Reading the current Economist, I found this wonderfully evocative passage, drawing me in:

“OBSERVED at a distance, traditional societies hold a great fascination for people who are raised in the secure world of middle-class modernity. There is a keen appetite for memoirs and works of popular anthropology that offer some sense of what it is like to grow up in a setting where loyalty to the extended family, the faith, the tribe is unquestioned; and where people’s self-worth depends on acting out rituals and roles inherited from distant ancestors. When set against the atomised solitude of some forms of contemporary Western existence, life as an Ottoman imam, a tsarist peasant or an African warrior can appear romantic—even, somehow, whole and well-integrated where modern life is all too often fragmented and prolix.

For anyone who has ever felt a tinge of rose-tinted nostalgia for the traditional, Ayaan Hirsi Ali provides a bracing, and on the whole healthy, cold shower. Having experienced traditional society from the inside—in the form of a Muslim Somali family headed by a well-known politician who practised polygamy and left a deeply troubled and dysfunctional progeny—she has no time for sentimentality. As the world’s most famous ex-Muslim (who became a politician in the Netherlands, then a public intellectual in America), she tells people who have grown up in countries shaped by the Enlightenment and the scientific revolution that they don’t know how lucky they are.

Her African upbringing, as she recounts the story, was dark, fearful, full of tedious labour, meaningless rituals and irrational cruelty of which female circumcision was only the most egregious example. People succumbed to terrible diseases because they did not know the elementary facts about hygiene and health. An obsessive concern with the hereafter sapped their will to take practical steps that could have made their lives more bearable.”
— book review of her new book, Nomad

I had a chance to talk with her in the quiet shade of the trees of Aspen….

Regarding 9/11 as a trigger for her fracture of faith: “when I told my mom that there were Muslims in the World Trade towers, she replied ‘if they were in the towers, they were not Muslims.”

In response to a question from Deborah Scranton, the director of The War Tapes who was sitting with us: “For anyone who has spent time in the Muslim world, it is obvious that they believe they are in a holy war with the West.”

Teens in India: Book Review

India in Your Living Room Learning Series

Immerse yourself into the life of a teen in India. Within 100 pages you can learn about the life of typical Indian teenagers. Though pictures of India may look exotic, different and foreign, the lives of everyday teens may not be so different than the life of a teen in America. For instance, teens in India have to go to school and prepare for their future, they also enjoy participating in sports and community activities and spending time with friends, and, like any other teen also learns to balance all these responsibilities and activities with an active family life. All these aspects and more are beautifully narrated in Lori Shores book, Teens in India.

I really enjoyed this book, which I found in the children’s section of my local library. I believe all ages can benefit from this book. This book is a condensed, straight to the point, non-judgmental overview of not only the life of teens in India but the culture and lifestyle found in most parts of India. Why pick up one of those ‘boring’ books written by an academic with long words and paragraphs that put you to sleep, when you can read this fast paced, easy to read, entertaining book and in just a few hours? It’s not only the words that will draw you in, but the images and pictures. Browse the book for the pictures first and you will automatically be inspired to read the book too! I was happy to see all the photos were labeled with interesting facts. The photos immerse you in the everyday social, family, spiritual and educational experiences of a typical Indian teen and their family. It would not only prepare you to understand life in India, but could help prepare you for a possible trip to India or help you interact better with any Indian exchange students here.

This book does not feed into the stereotypes of India, it will give you a balanced view of the life of a teen, be it a life in the city or in the village. Exploring their life is very interesting. It is true that there are social issues in India, and these are briefly touched upon as they too are realities of a teen’s life in India just as social issues affect the lives of teens in America. I appreciate how these issues are revealed to the reader without judgment. Throughout the book, the judgment of what you learn is left to you as the reader and it is not given to you by the author. So do pick up this book, read it, learn about the culture of India and decide for yourself!

Natalie Angier is one of my favorite science writers who writes in New York Times. I am rereading this one one Women: an intimate geography after almost a decade as my own daughter turns 10 on Monday! NYT book review had mentioned once that it is a must read book for all women and especially for men to understand their mother, wife and daughters!

I spent most of my life thinking I would spend my entire life tearing through several books a week.

Then last fall happened. I got busy, and I’ve stayed busy, and I’ve turned into that saddest of souls: a person with no time to read. I felt the loss as soon as it happened, and in my mind, at least, I quit buying books, knowing that any I brought home would go unread.

So how then has this stack grown atop my dresser? Maybe they came from the same place that disappeared socks go? No, wait, in my house, disappeared socks go into my cat’s fetish stash, so that can’t be right…
