Q&A: Shopping in Progreso Mexico?

I am going on a cruise next week & am planning on doing some shopping in Mexico. We are stopping at Cozumel and Progreso, I’ve heard that the shopping in Progreso is much better. Any advice from someone who’s been to both? Progreso is a new one for me, I’ve shopped in Cozumel before & was very happy with the prices.

Try taking the ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen just across the channel. You will love the shopping on 5th Avenue. It’s about US and 25 minutes each way for the ferry.

Progreso should be considerably cheaper than Cozumel but at the markets and street venders set up for the cruise ships you will need to haggle and from what I’ve seen you’ll need to haggle quite a bit as the starting prices at the market tend to be very high.

If you want even more shopping you should see about a trip to Merida. Plaza Altabrisa is probably the nicest mall but Galerias Merida and Gran Plaza will be easier to get to from the cruise port of Progreso.

The colectivo from Progreso to Merida is 13 pesos and will pass the Galerias Merida on it’s way to centro. You can catch the collectivo 2 short blocks from where the artisans market is set up in Progreso (right were the bus from the ship lets you off). There is also a regular bus that runs every 10 minutes from the Autoprogreso bus terminal about the same distance from the market. That’s 14 pesos one way and I think 25 return.
