Question: Mystery Shopping and Taxes?

I have just become a mystery shopper and understand that I have to register as self employed and pay my own taxes. I am happy to do this, but does anyone know why this doesn’t apply to other ways of bringing in extra money? For example, I do online surveys, sell lots of stuff on e-bay (not an e-bay shop, just my son’s outgrown clothes) and write online reviews for which I get paid in cash, yet I am not required to pay tax for these. What’s the difference with mystery shopping?

Actually, there is little difference. Surveys and online reviews are also self-employment and you ARE required to report the income.

Your son’s clothes are not. When you sell them, you selling personal goods at a loss and that’s not deductible.
