I had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I cooked all the favorities and had my neice, her husband and my great neices and nephew over for dinner. The children made the day because they are just a joy to have around.
We stuffed ourselves and half watched dvds and talked. They left in the early evening because they live about 2 hours away. The only thing that dampended the day a bit was my son couldn’t get here from school on the east coast, but he will be joining me for Christmas break. We spoke on the phone.
I am NOT going shopping today. I don’t have credit cards and I refuse to go out and let myself be hyped into buying things I can’t afford. Black Friday for the retailers is not going to be RED Friday for me.
I have always celebrated Christmas sedately since I’ve been an adult. When I was a child, I had five siblings. Mom always told us to write out our wish lists after Thanksgiving. Being selfish children (as most are) and not understanding economics, we filled up those list with wild abandon. She always got EVERYTHING on them. Then she and dad began to fight over the bills from December 26th until well into June. Mom grew up during the depression. I think she was compensating for those hard times throughout our childhood. Living like that was hell.
So, when I had my own child, I didn’t tell he about Santa. I explained the true story of Christ to him and offered him to get a couple of reasonable gifts. I told him that was to remember the gifts of the Magi to the Christ child. He understood. We do the same to this day. We keep Christ in Christmas.
I love the lights, the carols, the movies of Christmas. We enjoy all of that, but we realize that Christmas commemorates the day the Messiah was born. It is not a greed or show me how much you love me with material things occasion.
I am glad I broke the cycle of insanity that I was raised under in going nearly bankrupt to celebrate Christmas.
