Question: are book reviews literary criticism?
I’m writing a paper and one requirement is to use a literary criticism, but the novel is fairly new, so do book reviews count?

It really depends on the ‘review’…When I did a similar assignment with my middle school students I had them look at and compare different movie reviews…some reviews simply go through and give the main idea about the movie (here’s what it’s about and the actors in it)…whereas some movie reviews actually provide criticism about whether the movie is any good…and why (or why not). The same would apply for books…just make sure your review actually critiques the book rather than provides a general overview.
